What is
THE ORIGINAL HOT BIKRAM YOGA?
Bikram Yoga is designed for reversing, slowing down, and curing most chronic health problems.
Therapeutic 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises is practiced in controlled heat - the sequence is always the same.
It is medicine for our imbalanced lifestyles. And, unlike contemporary pharmaceutical approaches, The Original Yoga comes with a long list of positive, life-enhancing side effects!
The Original Hot Bikram Yoga practice is and always has been curvy-friendly, trauma-sensitive, and accessible to those healing from injuries and surgeries –
Yet challenging to the professional athletes, weekend warriors and embraced by sports coaches.
It is particularly accessible to men, as well as those over 50.
How long have doing the Original Hot Bikram Yoga?
I’ve been doing it for about seven or eight years. I tore my Achilles and couldn’t run. I had surgery and was in a cast for months, then I had to try to get back into it. All I could do was walk on the treadmill and ride a bike. I went to a Christmas party and a girl said, “You should try the Original Hot Bikram Yoga, it would strengthen your calf and Achilles.”
I went home and looked online, but never went to class. A year went by. The following year I had another injury (I have had eight surgeries in the past ten years). I was at the same Christmas party — it was a runners Christmas party. This same girl said, “Have you tried the Original Hot Bikram Yoga”. The next day I went and have been going ever since.
How did your body respond?
The Original Hot Bikram Yoga is everything a runner needs. You’re strengthening, balancing and stretching. You’re using all those muscles. You’re getting stronger and healthier. It’s a perfect fit with running.
Did Hot Yoga help your specific injuries?
It’s been awesome. I had two surgeries on one knee, one on the other. I have to be careful in some of the postures not to overdo it, but it definitely helped strengthen my Achilles tendon. Overall, I’m more balanced. I had therapists talking about orthotics and stuff. That’s why I go to yoga.
What are the biggest benefits of Bikram Yoga for runners?
To me three keys are: Stretching – the heat definitely helps you stretch, the postures definitely help you.
Balancing – I broke my neck in 1990, then had surgery to fuse the rest of my spine, I lost a lot of balance. If I close my eyes I can fall over. The standing series teaches you to balance your feet, spread them properly when you’re standing, and that helps in running a lot, because you learn to hit your feet the right way.
Last but not least, Core Strength. The Original Hot Yoga hits everything you need for running. No other cross-training exercise does that.
I tell everyone I’m coaching or training to try THE ORIGINAL HOT Bikram Yoga!

OF THE ORIGINAL HOT BIKRAM YOGA
As we hit the roads and trails, pushing our limits and seeking new challenges -
it’s essential to incorporate active recovery into our training programs that can elevate our running performance and keep us running longer and stronger.
Professional, amateur, and aspiring runners & athletes have benefited from the Original Hot Bikram-method Yoga for several decades. Many San Marcos area distance runners practice at Hot Yoga San Marcos to shorten their recovery times, reduce injuries, and drastically improve athletic performance.
Surprising Benefits You Can’t Ignore…
STRETCHING
My own mentality as a runner was intense. I liked the workout. I didn’t like stretching because it didn’t feel like anything was happening. By dedicating 90 minutes once or twice a week to Bikram Yoga, you will achieve that same “runners’ high” in class, but you’ll be stretching. In short, running tightens and stretching loosens.HEAT TOLERANCE
April weather is unpredictable in Boston. Some years Marathon Monday can be freezing and rainy, other years it can be sunny, hot, and humid. Practicing Bikram Yoga allows runners to build up stamina in preparation for running in the heat. My runner students tell me they felt great during their marathon/half marathon/10K/5K/etc. even when the outside temperatures are sweltering. They’re able to control their breathing and pace themselves since they had learned how to do so in class.INJURY PREVENTION
This one really hits home for me. I’ve had three running-related stress fractures (one that I mentioned above and two in high school). Running can pound on your joints – your knees, back, ankles, and feet all take a beating. And that’s the nature of the sport and it’s ok, but Bikram Yoga prevents the pounding from side-lining you. In every posture, we stretch. This stretching creates space – actual space – between the joints. The heat, along with the stretching, help to increase blood circulation throughout your entire body, so you can rest assure that you’re receiving blood flow to otherwise ignored places. Training for a race only to get injured is such a bummer. Even if you’re a weekend warrior who just enjoys being outdoors and running with friends, you still want to be able to have that time and not let a running injury get the best of you.MENTAL STRENGTH
No matter what level of runner you are, having mental strength helps. Bikram Yoga is another physical activity that will push you to your limits and challenge you not to let anything steal your peace. Think of your yoga practice as your mental strength training. You’ll be able to carry that strength out onto the road.IT’S A WORKOUT AFTER ALL
Chances are you enjoy exercising if you’re a runner. You love the heart pounding, mental challenging, sweat- producing workout. Running provides stress relief and at the same time keeps your body in shape. It’s both meditative and tough. Take it from a runner, from a Boston Marathon finisher in fact, that Bikram Yoga is all of these things too. It satisfies every aspect of that desire for a hard workout, while it equally and simultaneously repairs and recharges your mind and joints.

MEET THE DIRECTOR OF HYSM - Long time Runner &Hot Yogi
I was invited into the world of Bikram Yoga back in 2010. I was a distance runner & cardio queen fueled by high anxiety - Running was my happiest place. A group of women in my Team-in-Training running club practiced Bikram regularly. At first I thought…not for me! Stretching for 90 minutes sounded dreadfully boring.
But as I learned more, my interest grew. I read about all the therapeutic benefits…the healing testimonials…the personal stories of transformation. I wanted to sweat & detox like I was in a sauna and warm muscles stretching in the heat sounded pretty incredible. I tried some of the postures I saw online and I couldn’t do them. Would the heat really loosen my muscles and make these postures accessible?
When I realized this class would be challenging, not boring…
I booked my first full 90 minute Original Hot Yoga class. I wanted so much to love it!! I wanted to be ‘good’ at it. Y’all. This class was SO hard!! Harder than running! My beginning plays out like a love/hate RomCom…I kept coming back…I kept trying…the practice & the community reeled me in & completely won me over.
This was a monumental step forward on my journey to becoming a stronger, healthier, more complete version of me. I run better now in my 40s than I did in my 20s. I FEEL better running now than I did then. And I honestly believe this practice has made it possible for me to continue running years and years later.
The best part?! The benefits of this practice extend far beyond running! This practice is for everyone!! I invite you to take an Original Hot class with us and see what this class has to offer you! See you in the Hot Room!!
xoxo, Laura
